Excursion Trip to Kerala

Sarala Birla  Gyan Jyoti in collaboration with Abhinav Travels  Kolkata  had organized a trip to Kerala during  the session –break of 2016-17,for classes V, VI, VII. Altogether 96 students accompanied by 8 teachers along with the Principal Ma’am went for the trip. It was a trip of 7 days from 23rd March to 30th March.

On 23rd March we took the morning flight from Guwahati to Cochin. That evening we visited the Marina  beach. The next morning we went to see the St. Francis  church and the tomb of Vasco da Gama and also visited the Cemetery beach. The next morning we left for Munnar, which is like a paradise on earth. Both  sides of the road were lined with lush green tea gardens and the sight was enchanting. We stopped to see a dam and then we were taken to a tea factory where we were shown how  the tea leaves are crushed, dried , rolled and sieved to make tea. A very informative talk was given on the benefits of drinking green tea and the children learnt about the medicinal qualities of green tea and its therapeutic uses. Munnar is also famed for its spices and the moment one enters the region, one gets the aroma of spices. Everyone bought a lot of spices to take back home.

From Munnar  we travelled   to Alleppey and went straight for a boat ride down the back-waters. It was  a beautiful  journey down the canals dotted with coconut  palm trees  and filled one with a sense of peace. The next day  we visited the holy shrine of Padmanabha  temple.Inside was a huge statue of Lord Vishnu  in a reclining position. It is an ancient temple  almost 500 years old. Next to the temple  was the palace of the Chera king, which was beautifully carved in wood.It was filled with priceless  treasures including paintings, potteries, statues and ancient arms. The history of the last ruling dynasty was explained in detai by a guide.l.

The following day  we went to Kanyakumari to visit the Vivekanada Rock Memorial. We had to cross over to the island by launch. . It is a historic place where Swami Vivekananda  meditated and got enlightenment.. There is a huge  rock temple  on top of a hill  from where you can see the merging of the waters of the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Finally we reached Trivandrum and was completely overwhelmed by the beauty of the  Kovalam beach, where the children really  enjoyed themselves. On 30th morning  we took the flight and returned back to Guwahati, totally refreshed and rejuvenated, learning a lot about Kerala and arealising  why  Kerala  is called God’s own country.

We would like to offer our heartfelt  gratitude to Principal Ma’am  for making this  trip happen and giving us an opportunity to visit  the beautiful state of Kerala..
